Where do I apply? The first time you apply for a residence permit, you do so at a Swedish embassy or consulate in your country of origin or your country of domicile. List of addresses to the Swedish embassies and consulates If you want to renew your permit, you apply for an extension to the Migration Board: Migrationsverket, Tillståndsenheten, 601 70 Norrköping. Alternatively, you can apply at any of the Migration Board offices in Sweden and the application will be forwarded to Norrköping. The office addresses are listed here. What does it cost to apply? You may be required to pay an application fee. If your application is denied, the fee will not be refunded. You can read about the fees In a special information sheet. Who decides my case? The embassy or consulate sends your application to the Migration Board in Sweden, which takes the decision on your permit. You will be notified of the decision by the embassy or consulate to which you applied. How long will I have to wait for a decision? To be sure of obtaining your permit in time, you should present your application five months prior to your departure for Sweden. How long is a permit valid? If you are granted a residence permit, it is valid for 12 months (in some cases six months) at a time for a trial period of two years. When you submit your first application for an extension, the Migration Board will check to see whether you have been able to support yourself, whether you have started a business and whether it has been registered with the Swedish Patent and Registration Office, PRV. When you apply for subsequent extensions, the Migration Board will check to see whether you can still support yourself, whether you are running your company in accordance with the plans you submitted, and whether you have whatever other permits may be required to operate your business. At the end of the two-year trial period, you may be granted a permanent residence permit (PUT) on condition that you are able to support yourself through the business. May my family come with me?Your spouse/cohabitant and unmarried children under 18 are eligible for residence permits if they can show that their upkeep is assured. They are granted permits for the same length of time as you. Your spouse/cohabitant cannot obtain a work permit, however. Can I appeal if the Migration Board turns down my application? If the Migration Board decides not to grant you a residence permit you can appeal against the decision within three weeks of the date on which you received the decision. You send the appeal to the Migration Board, which will go through your case once again. If the Board stands by its rejection decision, your appeal will pass to the Migration Court at one of the three county administrative courts in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malm?. Which court will hear your appeal depends on which permit unit rejected your application. If you have granted a person in Sweden a power of attorney and thus the right to represent you, he or she can prepare the appeal and send it in.
